Ijen Crater is considered as the world largest active crater. It is located between Banyuwangi and Situbondo residences. The crater width is about 5.466 hectares and 200 m deep.The height of Mount Ijen itself is 2.386 masl. We have to go on foot from Paltuding post for about 3 km away, and it takes about 2 hours long. Once we reach the crater, a beautiful scenery of natural wonder will be shown right in front of our eyes. The blue color gradation of the water, the green color on the mountain slope and land formation on the crater rim will make us forget everything but to admire God's creation on this land.
One phenomenon on Ijen Crater is the Blue Fire near the crater. They say that there are only two blue fires in the world, one is at Ijen Crater the other one is at Iceland. This make Ijen Crater become more special to the tourists. We can also see the sulfur miner going around the tracks, every morning the local miners walk up and down at Mount Ijen to mine the sulfur near the crater. They can lift until 100 kg at a time. It's not only about economic reason, it's also a culture they have to preserve. Ijen is one of the main sulfur mining in Indonesia.
