Common Route for Bule

Bule a.k.a Caucasian Tourist

Bule's Route

Hi guys, don't you agree that Indonesia is blessed with such beautiful nature and culture?. Though some of it's politicians had been showing dumb moves in searching for power. Bu trust me, Indonesia is still attractive to the people of the world, especially those who want to see natural beauties in cheap cost. Yes, it is cheap traveling in Indonesia. For those with Dollars in pocket, current currency rate is around Rp 13k to Rp 14k per US Dollar.

You can buy a McDonalds or KFC Chicken in Indonesia just for 2 bucks. Yeah, it's cheap right. Cost of train ticket from Jakarta to Surabaya on the east is around Rp 300k or $21, and it's already a VIP or Executive class, but you know when I said Executive Class Train it means an Economic Class train in Europe as I heard from a Dutch man during my trip to Mt.Bromo. It's also the same when you go by economic class air tickets.

I've been traveling to some part of Indonesia, especially around Java and Bali. I went to Bandung recently, and to Lombok just few months before. During my trip, I met a lot of foreigner backpackers which mostly are the Bules (bule = Caucasian). Some of them even became my trip mates, we spent some time together, of course we talked a lot about many things.

One of the topics were mostly about the trip they've been doing. I have found that most of them having the same route of doing traveling in Indonesia. If we notice, they first will arrive in Jakarta and after spending some times in Jakarta, maybe one or two days, or even a week or two if they have friends from Jakarta.

National Monument (Monas), Jakarta
Then they will leave for Jogjakarta, here they will spend more time, coz the living cost in Jogjakarta is much cheaper than in Jakarta. They can enjoy a lot of things, from the natural beauties, the culture and even historic ruins of Javanese Hinduism ruins which scattered all over the place. The most visited ancient ruins are Brorobudur Temple in Magelang, the World largest Budhist Monument, and Prambanan Temple nearby Jogjakarta city.

Prambanan Temple, Jogjakarta
Enough enjoying Jogjakarta, they will depart for Mt.Bromo in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, either transit in Surabaya city or Malang city in East Java Province. Coz Mt.Bromo is accessible from both cities. If they want to see another big city with shopping center and malls and of course the variety of culinary specialty, they will go to Surabaya as the transit city, it's just that Surabaya is very hot and humid, you'll get sweat a lot.

Or, if they want to enjoy some chill place with variety of tourist attractions, even beautiful beaches and highland area, they will choose to stay for a while in Malang city. Then go to Mt. Bromo afterwards. There are few things to do in Mt.Bromo area, on top of the list is to see the golden sunrise at the Penanjakan View. After Penanjakan view they will hike the volcano rim if it is in a good status or not erupting, then to enjoy the surrounding area with serenity of surreal scenery.

Next destination is the Kawah Ijen at the Banyuwangi regency on the eastern most of Java Island, from Mt.Bromo they can get public transport or just rent the Hardtop to take them to Kawah Ijen. Kawah Ijen is the world largest active volcanic crater. Its blue color water attracts a lot of people from other countries. Especially the blue fire which we can only find in two places in the world, which here at the Kawah Ijen and the other one is at the Iceland.

Finally the last destination an the must visit destination for the Bules is Bali. It is already close from Kawah Ijen. They just need to go to Ketapang Ferry port and cross the Bali strait for about two hours and continue by bus to Denpasar for another four hours. I think that I don't need to talk about Bali, everyone already knows about Bali. It has already been a world class tourist destination for a long time.

So that's it, the common route for Bule Bckpackers when they do traveling in Indonesia. It can take around one or two weeks time for the traveling. If the travelers have more time and money, they will continue to Lombok and the islands on the east to Komodo Island at East Nusa Tenggara Province.
